Chapter 1: Formalism for Quantum Confined States
1.1 Crystal symmetry and irreducible representations
1.2 Angular momentum states of bulk semiconductors
1.3.1 Group theory and k.p method: bulk band structures
1.3.2 Group theory and Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian
1.4 Strain effects and deformation potentials
1.5 Shallow impurity states and effective mass theory
1.6 Envelope function method for quantum-confined states
1.7 Quantum Confined Structures in low dimensions :
quantum wells (QW) and superlattices (SL), wires and dots
1.8 QW and SL in an electric field
1.9 Selection Rules: linear and nonlinear optical process
1.10 GaAs and GaN band structure calculation

Chapter 2: Linear Optical Process
2.1 Interband optical transitions
2.2 Exciton-Polariton effects
2.3 Intersubband optical transitions

課程目標
Prepare the students with knowledge and skills to understand and analyze the milestone papers in the area of semiconductor optics, extend the learned knowledge to analyze the linear optical process occurred in low dimensional quantum confined structures using advanced calculation methods in semi-classical and quantum mechanics. 
課程要求

we take jounal papers as homework as well.
